Technology Trends Of The Month (March 2024)

A monthly summary of the technology trends I share daily on social media platforms.

Below is one of the mind-blowing example videos created with Sora, a Generative AI application recently announced by OpenAI. This video, produced from just a few lines of description, clearly indicates that we are heading towards a future where a movie tailored specifically for you can be instantly created and played based on a few sentences starting with "I want to watch a movie like this."

A bit of gossip 😁 When Elon Musk's ex-girlfriend started dating someone new, he unfollowed her on the X platform 😄 While this might not seem significant to us, it highlights how actions like "Unfollow" have replaced old-school reactions such as not answering calls or ignoring someone in public. The fact that these relational reactions now occur on a platform everyone can observe is just one of many indicators of how publicly we are living our private lives.

Since Elon Musk took over Twitter and rebranded it as X, the platform has lost 22.9% of its daily active users in the US (during the same period, TikTok lost 9.5% and Instagram 4.4%). It seems that the new strategies and changes Musk has implemented are pushing the platform further behind its competitors.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a type of artificial intelligence capable of learning, understanding, making decisions, and solving problems at a level equivalent to human intelligence. Unlike current AI, AGI possesses much broader knowledge and skills, with the ability to learn and adapt to new situations in unfamiliar areas. Predictions about when today's AI software will reach this exciting yet also frightening AGI level are becoming more imminent. NVIDIA's CEO forecasts that this milestone could be achieved in as little as five years. Consequently, the importance and urgency of regulations and controls to ensure AI offers more benefits than harm are increasing.

NVIDIA has announced its collaboration with Hippocratic AI, a company developing solutions for the healthcare sector, and introduced a virtual health worker application. This Generative AI-powered virtual health worker answers patients' questions and guides them through treatment processes. The hourly wage for this virtual employee has been set at $9. It's encouraging to see technological advancements in the healthcare sector. However, it is also thought-provoking that even a virtual employee earns four times more than the minimum wage in Turkey...

Do you know which shopping apps are the most downloaded on phones in America? Surprisingly, Amazon is not in the top spot. Amazon, which has long held third place, has now fallen to fourth. Leading the list are two Chinese companies: the online clothing store Shein and the online marketplace platform Temu. Although these two apps have high download numbers, they are not yet at a level to compete with Amazon in terms of market share. However, their strategies of offering low-priced products, investing in supplier partnerships, and rapidly increasing recognition are starting to put pressure on Amazon. From a consumer perspective, competition is good; it encourages market leaders to improve :)

YouTube now requires content creators to clearly label content generated using Generative AI. This rule is a crucial step to prevent the spread of misleading information, particularly deepfakes and other content that is indistinguishable from reality. The European Union's AI Act, which was passed in 2023 and will take effect in 2025, will also mandate this labeling for AI-generated content in member countries. By implementing this measure, Google seems to be prioritizing the fight against fake and manipulative content, especially ahead of the upcoming elections in the United States.

Could the two major companies I previously worked for, Apple and Google, collaborate in the field of artificial intelligence? Google is positioning itself competitively in AI with its Gemini solution, a rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT, while Apple consistently signals its determination not to fall behind in AI advancements. According to news sources, Apple is negotiating with Google to integrate the Gemini AI solution into the iPhone operating system. It is evident that Apple's primary goal is to enhance Siri with AI, aiming to secure a strong position against Google and OpenAI. However, Apple also appears willing to collaborate with competitors to develop quick solutions.

The Role of Legal Regulations in Establishing the Benefit-Harm Balance in Artificial Intelligence. The world has already embarked on legal regulations to protect against the potential dangers of breathtaking AI. If you want to read this article I wrote for Inc. Turkey magazine:

OpenAI once again demonstrates its ambitious position and leadership in AI with its humanoid robot, developed in collaboration with the robotics technology company FigureAI. This also indicates that they are in a much more advanced position compared to similar initiatives by Elon Musk, with whom they are currently in a legal battle.

Which jobs are most likely to be replaced by artificial intelligence? Business Insider recently identified 10 professions at risk. One thing is certain: AI will impact all job areas, either entirely or partially. How can you make sure that you use AI as a tool to help you work more efficiently, instead of letting AI replace you in your role? The key is to stop performing tasks the same way as an automation software and start focusing on how you can add more value to your work.

Currently, discussions are ongoing about the potential ban of TikTok in the United States, and Canadian businessman Kevin O'Leary's announcement that he is considering buying the platform adds an interesting perspective to the situation. While this may remain speculative, the possibility of TikTok being banned in the US is still a significant topic. I believe that decisions to shut down social media platforms and internet applications are fundamentally flawed.

The tension between OpenAI and Elon Musk continues. Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman accuses them of prioritizing commercial interests over public benefit, contrary to OpenAI's founding principles. In a field like Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which still contains many uncertainties and risks, questioning OpenAI's actions and bringing this issue to the forefront is not wrong. However, time will tell how sincere Musk's motives are and to what extent his commercial interests in ventures like Neuralink will take precedence over public benefits.

Apple is shelving its electric vehicle project to focus entirely on the fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence. So, what's behind this decision? Has Apple lost hope in electric vehicles, or is it shifting its focus to Generative AI to avoid falling behind giants like Google and OpenAI? I believe it's the latter. What do you think about this strategic move by Apple?
